“Chromatic Wednesdays”is a bi-weekly event series organized by Apartment Project, which promotes artistic expression across various disciplines and formats. Each month, Chromatic Wednesdays focuses on a new theme, for which two events are realized. In 2022, the themes were: Improvisation, Exile, Precarity, Mutualism, Recurrence, Echoes, Divergence, Instability, Curiosity, Resonance, Sanctuary and Inversion. In 2023: Solidarity, Upheaval, Resistance, Light, Comma, Mythology, Position, Urbanism, Unbound, Dystopia, Home and Intelligence. Chromatic Wednesdays invited artists, musicians, performers, scientists and cultural practitioners to collaborate, experiment and share their unique research, practices and experiences with each other and the public. The events included a wide range of multidisciplinary, hybrid formats, including concerts, performances, workshops, film screenings, lectures, exhibitions, readings, and panel discussions.

In 2021 the project came to life as a reaction to artistic disruption caused by the pandemic.  Today numerous challenges persistently endanger cultural production. How do artists and  audiences from different backgrounds and mediums come together? What forms of new expression can be explored or can be expanded? What kind of new networks between institutions and artists can be established? How can these networks sustain the survival of the artists?

As part of Chromatic Wednesdays’ Season 2 and 3, a total of 167 participants from countries, such as Turkey, Germany, France, Italy, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Ukraine, Norway, Japan, Iran, Poland, Switzerland, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Sweden, Russia, China, the U.K, USA, Portugal, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cameroon, Namibia, Israel, Egypt, Spain, Austria, Ireland, Russia, Taiwan were invited. Of them, 92 female, 63 male and 12 non-binary participated.

The very first editions were streamed online due to Corona measures. Since June 2021, the events have been held in a hybrid format, mainly at the Apartment Project and online.

Episode 5

Theme:
Precarity

HUNGRY AND RESTLESS

Posthumous conversation between Fatma Belkıs and Ali Taptık
Inaudible Disquietudes Concert by sarc

Precarity leaves people in a constant state of insecurity and uncertainty, a phenomenon continually escalating in neoliberal societies. This session of Chromatic Wednesdays tackled the subject through experimental artistic forms. First, artists Fatma Belkıs and Ali Taptık contemplated the theme not as humans, but as a zombie and a ghost, respectively. In a quasi-afterlife, they examined their practices and afterlives from a posthumous perspective, referencing Fatma’s artist book “Those who Stayed” (2011). The question arises: Will their alleged undead state change their view on the topic of precarity?

In his music performance, “Inaudible Disquietudes,” sarc (Emre Sarıgöl) then made uncanny states audible through live synthesized compositions. Episodes of modular order and chaos, reminiscent of otherworldly memories and visions, echoed how individuals experience existence in a world where relationships with the beyond often remain mute.

Fatma Belkıs (b. 1985, Antalya): An artist based in Istanbul, Fatma works with text, video, and printed matter, both individually and in collectives. Her practice draws on human experiences undergoing transformation, especially in interactions between different people. Despite her artistic exploration, in her personal life, she prefers the company of cats. Fatma studied visual arts and communication design in Istanbul, showcasing her works at various international venues, including the Sharjah Biennial, Istanbul Modern, DEPO Istanbul, nGbK Berlin, and Tensta Konsthall Stockholm. Her films have been screened at international film festivals in Turkey and Europe.

Ali Taptık (b. 1983, Istanbul): An artist, architect, and publisher, Ali Taptık left his position as a Ph.D. student at Istanbul Technical University due to ideological reasons. He continued his research on the relationship between textile production and Istanbul’s urban transformation as an independent researcher. His works focus on the representation of urban landscape and architecture, the relationship between the individual and the city, psychogeography, and the interaction of literature and visuality. Ali has authored several artist books, exhibited in various institutions, including SALT Istanbul, MAXXI Rome, Ashkal Alwan Beirut, the Venice Biennial for Architecture, and the Istanbul Biennial. He is one of the founders of the “Bandrolsüz” collective for the distribution of independent artists’ books and serves as the director of “Onagöre,” a design and publishing agency.
sarc (Emre Sarıgöl): A musician from Istanbul currently based in Zurich, sarc comes from an improvised music practice, initially playing bass and Middle Eastern instruments. Later, he turned to synthesizers and modular electronics, especially since founding the duo Fezayafirar with f:rar (Melih Sarıgöl) in 2012. His performances combine microtonal music and live synthesis, exploring rhythmic, harmonic, and atonal patterns that merge in louder and quieter parts. Active in the improvisation and electronic music scene in Switzerland, Germany, and Turkey, he has produced releases on labels such as Crystal Mine, Burgos, Kinetic Records, Thessaloniki, Attenuation Circuit, Augsburg, and Endtitles, Zurich. Together with Gergemann (Gökalp Ergeçen), he recently launched Daralan Records, an Istanbul-based electronic music label.
