“Chromatic Wednesdays”is a bi-weekly event series organized by Apartment Project, which promotes artistic expression across various disciplines and formats. Each month, Chromatic Wednesdays focuses on a new theme, for which two events are realized. In 2022, the themes were: Improvisation, Exile, Precarity, Mutualism, Recurrence, Echoes, Divergence, Instability, Curiosity, Resonance, Sanctuary and Inversion. In 2023: Solidarity, Upheaval, Resistance, Light, Comma, Mythology, Position, Urbanism, Unbound, Dystopia, Home and Intelligence. Chromatic Wednesdays invited artists, musicians, performers, scientists and cultural practitioners to collaborate, experiment and share their unique research, practices and experiences with each other and the public. The events included a wide range of multidisciplinary, hybrid formats, including concerts, performances, workshops, film screenings, lectures, exhibitions, readings, and panel discussions.

In 2021 the project came to life as a reaction to artistic disruption caused by the pandemic.  Today numerous challenges persistently endanger cultural production. How do artists and  audiences from different backgrounds and mediums come together? What forms of new expression can be explored or can be expanded? What kind of new networks between institutions and artists can be established? How can these networks sustain the survival of the artists?

As part of Chromatic Wednesdays’ Season 2 and 3, a total of 167 participants from countries, such as Turkey, Germany, France, Italy, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Ukraine, Norway, Japan, Iran, Poland, Switzerland, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Sweden, Russia, China, the U.K, USA, Portugal, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cameroon, Namibia, Israel, Egypt, Spain, Austria, Ireland, Russia, Taiwan were invited. Of them, 92 female, 63 male and 12 non-binary participated.

The very first editions were streamed online due to Corona measures. Since June 2021, the events have been held in a hybrid format, mainly at the Apartment Project and online.

WANDERING THROUGH UNCERTANITY

«Ambitions are not co-existential»: performance by Stephanie Hanna & Bernhard Wöstheinrich

Film screening of «Ghosts» (2020, 90 min, Turkey, France, Qatar) by Azra Deniz Okyay, followed by a Q&A session with Şirin Fulya Erensoy

With this session, Chromatic Wednesdays enquired into how people respond to the presence of precarity in individuals and in society. Stephanie Hanna will approach this question through her «bodymind wanderings», a video performance lecture accompanied by Bernhard Wöstheinrich’s ambient soundscapes. Stephanie’s video observations, her views on theories on human experience, and Bernhard’s sounds will enable wanderings through the complexity fields of the present moment. By consciously entering a state of precariousness, the artists will draw attention to the transformative power of resistance and imagination.

Azra Deniz Okyay’s film «Ghosts» illuminated the experience of precarity in a microcosm by following four characters in Istanbul on a day on the brink of a nationwide blackout: a mother whose son is in prison, a young woman devoted to dancing, an activist and artist, and a wily middleman, all in a neighborhood that is in the middle of the process of gentrification towards «New Turkey». Their paths cross as the day progresses to a drug-dealing incident and a compelling story of today’s generations unfolds. Stephanie Hanna is an artist, art mediator, stage and costume designer, performer and author. Since the 1990s she has been working with bodily-spatial perception in the fields of art and performance, often outside of art contexts, as well as in mediation in workshops and participatory projects. She studied stage and costume design (Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin and Utrecht School of the Arts, 2001) and completed the master’s degree Art in Context at the Berlin University of the Arts (2006). She is currently training in somatic movement therapy and pedagogy to deepen and professionalize her long experience in this field. Bernhard Wöstheinrich (b. 1968, Herzebrock) is a sound artist, improviser and painter living in Berlin. He elicits meaning from abstraction in electronic music and painting. After his first experiments with sounds and tunes starting from 1987, he studied visual communication in Bielefeld and created an eclectic body of work from this synthesis of sound, music, graphics and performance. Azra Deniz Okyay (b. 1983, Istanbul) started practicing photography at the age of 12 and became an assistant of the photographer Dora Gunel at 14. She studied cinema at the Sorbonne- Nouvelle, where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and studied sociology for two years at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales. Upon her return to Turkey in 2010, she became the first female director at Depo, an Istanbul based advertising production company. She made several short films and music videos. Her first feature film «Ghosts» won the Settimana de la Crittica 2020 at Venice International Film festival 2020.
