Chromatic Wednesdays is a monthly interdisciplinary event series based in Berlin, organized by visual artist and filmmaker Emre Birişmen and sound artist Melih Sarıgöl. The series brings together various artistic practices, including performance, sound, moving image, and panel discussions, in thematically structured programs at different venues across the city. 

Chromatic Wednesdays, which previously centered around the Apartment Project space in Neukölln, will transition to a mobile and decentralized structure for its upcoming fourth and fifth seasons. This shift aims to encourage stronger collaborations, emphasize site-specific thinking, and build new connections that reflect the social and cultural fabric of Berlin.

TREMBLING GROUND

Panel discussion with Bahar Bayhan and Müge Yazıcı, moderated by Erden Kosova
Although investments are increasingly being made in cities as predictable environments, urban structures are not able to withstand natural disasters. Urban planning based on scientific research seems to make cities resilient, but earthquakes, floods and other consequences of climate change challenge such rational predictions. In light of these experiences the question arises as to what we have actually learned from previous calamities. In the panel discussion moderated by Erden Kosova, guests of this edition of Chromatic Wednesdays, Bahar Bayhan and Müge Yazıcı, asked: What are the challenges at a time when natural disasters caused by human activity are accelerating? What makes cities and their inhabitants vulnerable? Given the failure of ‹earthquake-resistant› building design, they discussed urbanism as both a cause of and response to disasters, focusing on the 6 February 2023 earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

Bahar Bayhan graduated from the Department of City and Regional Planning and received her MA in Sociology from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. She has been working as Urban Policy Programme Coordinator at MAD.

Müge Yazıcı studied geology at Istanbul Technical University and earned an M.Sc. in Active Tectonics and Earthquake Geology. After working in Turkey and Mongolia, she moved to Berlin in 2020 and started her PhD on landscape evolution in Chile.

After the Quake is organized by independent architecture and urban planning students, university staff and alumni in Berlin to support students affected by the earthquakes in Turkey. With more than 4 million people having been displaced and thousands of buildings rendered uninhabitable, assistance in providing educational resources is needed in addition to emergency relief. This long-term aid is aimed at helping victims get back on their feet after the initial rush of donations has subsided. It includes rebuilding and repairing schools, providing necessary teaching materials and resources, and psychological support for students struggling with trauma and other challenges. The goal is to help students regain a sense of normalcy and resume their education, which is crucial to their long-term well-being. To achieve this, donations collected on GoFundMe are distributed to trusted NGOs based on current needs. After the Quake ensures that all expenses are shared publicly and transparently. In addition, After the Quake organizes student-led events that contribute to GoFundMe donations.


The event was organized in solidarity with the people affected by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. Donations could be made to «After the Quake».
