“Chromatic Wednesdays”is a bi-weekly event series organized by Apartment Project, which promotes artistic expression across various disciplines and formats. Each month, Chromatic Wednesdays focuses on a new theme, for which two events are realized. In 2022, the themes were: Improvisation, Exile, Precarity, Mutualism, Recurrence, Echoes, Divergence, Instability, Curiosity, Resonance, Sanctuary and Inversion. In 2023: Solidarity, Upheaval, Resistance, Light, Comma, Mythology, Position, Urbanism, Unbound, Dystopia, Home and Intelligence. Chromatic Wednesdays invited artists, musicians, performers, scientists and cultural practitioners to collaborate, experiment and share their unique research, practices and experiences with each other and the public. The events included a wide range of multidisciplinary, hybrid formats, including concerts, performances, workshops, film screenings, lectures, exhibitions, readings, and panel discussions.

In 2021 the project came to life as a reaction to artistic disruption caused by the pandemic.  Today numerous challenges persistently endanger cultural production. How do artists and  audiences from different backgrounds and mediums come together? What forms of new expression can be explored or can be expanded? What kind of new networks between institutions and artists can be established? How can these networks sustain the survival of the artists?

As part of Chromatic Wednesdays’ Season 2 and 3, a total of 167 participants from countries, such as Turkey, Germany, France, Italy, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Ukraine, Norway, Japan, Iran, Poland, Switzerland, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Sweden, Russia, China, the U.K, USA, Portugal, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cameroon, Namibia, Israel, Egypt, Spain, Austria, Ireland, Russia, Taiwan were invited. Of them, 92 female, 63 male and 12 non-binary participated.

The very first editions were streamed online due to Corona measures. Since June 2021, the events have been held in a hybrid format, mainly at the Apartment Project and online.

A DESPERATE VITALITY

Live interpretations of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s «A Desperate Vitality» by Dafne Narvaez Berlfein, DuChamp, Ithaka and Seamus O’Donnell

The poem «A Desperate Vitality» by Pier Paolo Pasolini from 1964 is written in cutting rhythms that move up and down, full of allusions and quotations that change between absurdity and sadness. In their performance at Chromatic Wednesdays, Dafne Narvaez Berlfein, DuChamp, Ithaka and Seamus O’Donnell circled around this poem interpreting it between words and metaphors, sound images and screams.

Dafne Narvaez Berlfein is a Berlin-based film and video artist and researcher. With a focus on collaborative approaches and an intersectional perspective, her work spans multiple genres and media. Narvaez Berlfein uses film, videotape field recordings, live video captures and modulated interventions to create audiovisual interpretations in dialog with composers, sound artists and performers and through DIY and DIWO (do it with others) approaches.

The focus of Ithaka’s work is on phonetic and performative experimentation. Ithaka uses self-alienated micro-poems by means of a Dadaist language reduced to the realm of gesture.

DuChamp is an Italian scientist, musician dedicated to drone music and curator based in Berlin. Her releases include the albums «Nar», «Sculpture» and «A Blazing World». Her drone compositions are made by layering sounds and noises to create her own kind of apophonies. DuChamp incorporates field recordings, baritone guitar, keyboard and accordion into her music, drawing on her own personal memories. She is co-founder of the Berlin tape label Kitchen Leg records and organizes DIY concerts at Villa Kuriosum. She curated the drone sound series Alpha Wave at Spektrum Berlin and was co-curator of Occultofest.

Seamus O’Donnell works with radio frequency experiments, manipulated field recordings, self-made devices, amplified objects, magnetic fields, no-input mixer, traditional instruments and the voice. Whatever the medium, improvisation remains the most important factor in his sounds.
