“Chromatic Wednesdays”is a bi-weekly event series organized by Apartment Project, which promotes artistic expression across various disciplines and formats. Each month, Chromatic Wednesdays focuses on a new theme, for which two events are realized. In 2022, the themes were: Improvisation, Exile, Precarity, Mutualism, Recurrence, Echoes, Divergence, Instability, Curiosity, Resonance, Sanctuary and Inversion. In 2023: Solidarity, Upheaval, Resistance, Light, Comma, Mythology, Position, Urbanism, Unbound, Dystopia, Home and Intelligence. Chromatic Wednesdays invited artists, musicians, performers, scientists and cultural practitioners to collaborate, experiment and share their unique research, practices and experiences with each other and the public. The events included a wide range of multidisciplinary, hybrid formats, including concerts, performances, workshops, film screenings, lectures, exhibitions, readings, and panel discussions.

In 2021 the project came to life as a reaction to artistic disruption caused by the pandemic.  Today numerous challenges persistently endanger cultural production. How do artists and  audiences from different backgrounds and mediums come together? What forms of new expression can be explored or can be expanded? What kind of new networks between institutions and artists can be established? How can these networks sustain the survival of the artists?

As part of Chromatic Wednesdays’ Season 2 and 3, a total of 167 participants from countries, such as Turkey, Germany, France, Italy, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Ukraine, Norway, Japan, Iran, Poland, Switzerland, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Sweden, Russia, China, the U.K, USA, Portugal, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cameroon, Namibia, Israel, Egypt, Spain, Austria, Ireland, Russia, Taiwan were invited. Of them, 92 female, 63 male and 12 non-binary participated.

The very first editions were streamed online due to Corona measures. Since June 2021, the events have been held in a hybrid format, mainly at the Apartment Project and online.

THE MATTER OF MEMORY
Film screening of «Aidiyet» / «Belonging» (original with English subtitles)

Memories can reappear again and again like echoes in altered form. The film «Belonging» explores this theme with the means of experimental film. In the thriller, a man reconstructs the murder of his future mother-in-law, who opposes the relationship between him and her daughter Pelin. After seeing the scenes of the tragedy, the film’s focus shifts to the time when the lovers met before their love story became the scene of the crime. Questions emerge as to what led Pelin to defy her parents, and in what ways does this past become a memory that resonates in the present?

Burak Çevik (b. 1993, Istanbul) is a filmmaker, founder of the «Fol Cinema Society» and curator of experimental and arthouse film screenings. He was a lecturer on non-fiction at Istanbul Bilgi University from 2018 to 2020. His films «The Pillar of Salt» and «Belonging» premiered at the Berlinale Forum in 2018 and 2019, respectively. His video works and films have been screened at various festivals such as Locarno Film Festival, FID-Marseille, Toronto Film Festival and New York Film Festival. Currently, he is a film fellow at the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program.

Dilşad Aladağ studied architecture in Turkey and earned a Master of Science in European Urban Studies at the Bauhaus University of Weimar as a DAAD scholar. After graduation, she has worked in architecture and design teams, in artistic and curatorial fields and has been involved in arthouse film productions as a production designer. She is the co-founder of the urban collective «Plankton Project» and is currently co-curator and researcher of «The Garden of (not) Forgetting Project». In her artistic and scholarly practice, she is interested in the concepts of landscape, the Anthropocene, collective memory and archives. Her current work addresses the possibility of resilience that cultural and artistic practices can create in the face of emerging cultural and environmental issues.
