Chromatic Wednesdays is a monthly interdisciplinary event series based in Berlin, organized by visual artist and filmmaker Emre Birişmen and sound artist Melih Sarıgöl. The series brings together various artistic practices, including performance, sound, moving image, and panel discussions, in thematically structured programs at different venues across the city.

Chromatic Wednesdays, which previously centered around the Apartment Project space in Neukölln, will transition to a mobile and decentralized structure for its upcoming fourth and fifth seasons. This shift aims to encourage stronger collaborations, emphasize site-specific thinking, and build new connections that reflect the social and cultural fabric of Berlin.

EQUAL DISTANCE
«Solo Piano» by Ozan Tekin
Piano improvisation by Or Solomon in Ölberg-Kirche

This episode of Chromatic Wednesdays showed two piano performances that revolved around the meaning of «Comma» in music theory. In it, it describes a very small interval, bringing two notes closer together by tuning them differently. Although played one after the other, Ozan Tekin and Or Solomon’s performances converged through their commonalities of artistic exploration, personal expression and innovative approaches. Ozan ‘s compositions from his latest album «Anarya» took listeners on a musical journey that blended diverse influences from his hometown Adana, his temporary home of Istanbul and his recent home of Cologne. ‹Anarya gitmek› is an idiom in Ozan’s hometown that means ‹to go back› and expresses his symbolic return migration in his album. The resulting tracks are a sonic story reflecting Ozan’s various memories from these three places. His catchy tunes, immersive melancholic arpeggios and restless changes, albeit in different styles, express the ever-changing sense of belonging and the melodies that cannot be assigned to any specific ‹heimat›.

Taking up on this musical strand, Or Solomon sensitively expressed breath transformed into spoken words through his elegant and virtuosic playing, combining improvisation with his compositions. A dialog emerged between the words and the piano, joined by spatial constructions of Or’s «Meditations». This is a series of recorded improvisations reminiscent of the visual arts: Or powerfully paints a whole palette of sound imagery, a panorama of melodic and colorful fields, a bestiary of mythological animals, of sudden thoughts and of instinctual impulses as in mythical parables. Both artists reveal a sense of musical experimentation, pushing the boundaries of traditional musical forms. Their projects embody a fusion of musical influences and demonstrate their unique artistic vision to reinvent the art of solo piano performance.

Ozan Tekin (b. in Adana) is a composer and producer based in Cologne. He began playing the piano at the age of five, cultivating his attention to the phenomenon of sound at an early age. His latest album «Anarya» is a three-part compilation of his piano works, released in May 2022, in which he projects his compositions over neo-classical, jazz and ambient music. In his debut album «Pillars of Salt», released in October 2019, Ozan experiments with ambient compositions. Ozan also releases singer-songwriter songs under the alias Seyrek Rifat and composes music and does sound design for theater, performance, film and TV productions in Germany and Turkey.

Or Solomon (b. in Tel Aviv) is an Israeli-French pianist, composer and improviser. His life-long musical research has led him to develop an original approach to the piano as a sound generator, drawing inspiration from all interrelated dynamics, often resulting in abstract expressionist forms. He is obsessed with tying his music to a structure, set, harmony or a loop to create powerful musical, verbal and colorful images. The resulting pieces evoke paintings of abstract expressionism as they play with gestural strokes composed through spontaneity. At the same time, Or’s outstanding improvisations are always closely linked to his compositions.
